Determined by the gold of its setting?
Is a pearl worthless
While covered in sand and mud?

Does the sun shine less brilliant
When hidden from Earths face?
Is the beauty of a bloom erased
As the shadows of nights cover fall?

Can the richness of fine metals
Be tarnished by age and wear?
Is the majesty of a mountain peak
Diminished  when hidden from view?

Buried treasure unseen by eyes
Holds not only wealth beyond imagination
But anticipation And hope
Inspiring to focus and dig deeper

The value of a pure heart
Cannot be tainted by the world around
Each soul holds great worth
Despite the mire it has been dragged through

The brilliance of a creative mind
Exists even when undiscovered
Age cannot negate the value of experience
Wisdom is not lost with wrinkles and gray

Value, beauty, brilliance
exists within each of us
Waiting to be uncovered,
discovered, realized, celebrated.

I was sitting in a philosophy class the other day and we were debating whether the world is constant or constantly in flux. Later in the week I brought up this question with some of my friends: "Can you ever step into the same river twice? Is it actually the same river?" I will tell you, there is nothing more entertaining than breaking out an obscure question like this at a party or gathering. You definitely get some interesting looks, and some great conversation! But the question remains, does anything in our world stay the same? Even if the river is in the same place, with the same name, is it actually the same as it was yesterday? And even if we are who we are, with the same name and identity, are we really the same as last week? Or even 5 minutes ago? Change is constant. How many people find it really hard to relax? As I was watching Iron Man 3 the other night I felt myself thinking how lazy I am. Here is this guy who never sleeps, builds extravagant machinery on a perpetual basis and flies all over the world fighting the bad guys. And here I had slept in that morning... Yet as I was talking to a friend today at lunch, she commented on how much energy I have and how insanely busy my schedule is. Apparently, booking a lunch date with me is next to impossible. When I told her how lazy I have been feeling lately, she almost fell off her chair laughing! Her response?? "You haven't even been able to sit still through our hour long meal!!" How many of us are working harder than we have ever in our life and yet feel like we are not doing enough? The Resolutions of New Year's Past

To start, my New Year’s resolutions for 2013 read much like ones in the past...to lose weight, get in better shape, be more “others oriented” and less self-centered and become more productive. How many of us make resolutions like this every year only to have our determination wane within the first few months of the New Year? Reading these my list, I knew before 2013 even started I would probably lose focus by January 31 st . Now it’s not that I specifically think of myself as lazy or unmotivated, in fact I believe I am a pretty dedicated person. So why did these goals seem so unattainable? In part, because they require a giant leap from one place in life across a chasm to the other side of a white picket fence and partly because they are actually very negatively skewed, focusing on my character flaws or personal deficiencies.
